*see below for a definition of what Alternative History is about
If you are wondering what exactly defines the alternative history genre, take a look at what Novelist says:
“Alternative history books are a marriage of two bigger genres, historical fiction and science fiction. They pose a very specific kind of “what if” question to the reader: What if our known human history had been different? The author tinkers with recognizable history to create what is referred to as a “divergence point,” and then crafts a story that follows this new, alternative historical timeline. Though the story can diverge wildly from actual history, the author will take care to include historically accurate details alongside the speculative elements.”
