If you are wondering what exactly defines the space opera genre, take a look at what Novelist says:

“Contemporary space opera is grounded in large-scale conflicts familiar to fans of science fiction films and television series. Most often, space opera features a large ensemble of characters, many of whom are often non-human. Characters are frequently entangled in webs of intergalactic political conflict set against the backdrop of advances in space travel and evolving technology or are sometimes locked in battles with authority on an individual level, especially in mercenary or military-themed novels. Space operas can be epic sagas of powerful families stretch across time. Many space operas have elements of crime, conspiracy, and government or massive corporation cover-ups.”
